The Journey

"The Journey" combines urban landscape images with a figurative sculpture from the Cleveland Museum of Art.  It's a very meaningful collage painting from early in my career.  I became fascinated with the mixed-media process and narrative created between the contemporary and classical elements.

I referred to the artwork from this period as "Urban Romanticism" ~ a category that is currenty reflected in my recent multimedia art and installations.  My decision to work with larger canvases allowed me to apply paint in a much more liberating, and gestural way that incorporated my entire body.

During this period, I began experimenting with the concept of enlarging small collages into large multi-paneled works, while adding additional drips and splatters to the existing reproduced painted images. I began the process of narrowing the distinction between the real painted surface and the photographed surface. A type of trompe-l'oeil between image and surface ~ past and present.

I hope you enjoy.

Private Collection

This is an older work from the City Dream Series combining classical architecture elements with details of urban existence. After having left this subject matter for several years, I find myself returning to this combination of images.  Perhaps it's a reflection of the past and present bring together seemingly disparate images that quietly co-exist in our landscape.
